Queenie: First Person Observations

I checked out this book with the intention of reviewing it, as it’s gotten a lot of positive press, but about 50 pages in, I knew I couldn’t, because I’m a white woman who’s never encountered the horrendous racism, sexism, and abuse that Queenie endured. Also, some books are simply beyond my ability to assess. But I was privileged to read Candice Carty-Williams’ debut novel, and I’m grateful she wrote the brave, provocative, and searing story of Queenie Jenkins, a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman in London. I read it in a single day: it’s that riveting. If you need evidence that Black Lives Matter, read this book and thank the universe for Ms. Carty-Williams. #blacklivesmatter
